Joint Burial Authority

In 1982, when the burials grounds at the Parish Churches of St Peter's, Bishop's Waltham and St Barnabas', Swanmore were filled, the two Parish Councils established a joint burial authority and land at West Hoe was donated by Bishop's Waltham Parish Council for a cemetery. It is the policy of the Cemetery Committee, whose members comprise Parish Councillors from the two villages, to maintain the graves and memorials to as high a standard as is possible, with as little cost to the parishes as is consistent with those desires.

The Cemetery Today

It is the right of all residents of the two parishes to choose to be laid to rest at West Hoe. Parishioners and other close relatives receive preferential treatment, and the maintenance of the burial ground is subsidised from the Parish precepts of the two villages on a pro rata basis; two thirds from Bishop's Waltham and one third from Swanmore. West Hoe Cemetery is located on West Hoe Road between Bishop's Waltham and Swanmore. There is good car parking on the entrance drive and visitors are welcome to visit any day during the hours of daylight. A number of benches have been provided by families as memorials over the years and are used by many to sit and contemplate and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

From Bishop's Waltham Town Centre - From the one-way system at the top of the High Street, take Bank Street in the direction of Swanmore. cross the junction at Free Street and continue to the mini roundabout. Take the second exit into Hoe Road and West Hoe Cemetery will be found half a mile on the left.

From Swanmore - Go along Church Road in the direction of Bishop's Waltham. Continue straight on into Swanmore Road. Beyond the speed limit sign this becomes Hoe Road, and the West Hoe Cemetery will be found about a mile on the right hand side.

There is ample car parking space at the head of the driveway just before the Lych Gate.
